The Emilia Romagna region of Italy offers a wonderfully rich source of culture, architecture, gastronomy, history, beauty and beaches as well as 24 golf courses and 28 hotels

One of the richest regions in Europe, Emilia Romagna in the north of Italy has a long history of architectural beauty and rugged landscapes. Consisting of nine provinces, the region stretches out to the Adriatic Sea to the east, while the west is characterised by the Apennine Mountains that border with Tuscany.

Emilia Romagna has quickly established itself as a true golfing utopia. You’ll find no fewer than 24 tracks clustered within close proximity to one another. All this comes at an affordable price with Emilia Romagna Golf’s special discounted rates (see below), even more reason to sample the delights of one of the ‘hottest’ golfing destinations in Europe.

With 4 international airports, Bologna (central), Rimini and Forlì(east), and Parma (west) the region is highly accessible with direct flights and low cost flights from the main international European cities.

Bologna & Modena

In the more central area of Bologna and Modena, Golf Club Bologna offers panoramic views across the countryside, while Modena Golf & Country Club is one of Italy’s most distinguished courses with a reputation for its excellent condition. Designed by Bernhard Langer, you are blessed with 27 holes with winding fairways and numerous water hazards.

Just a half hour’s drive from Bologna airport, San Valentino Golf Club is a delightful but testing layout surrounded by an untouched landscape of woodland. Golf Club le Fonti is another eye-catching 18-hole parkland course with a warm family feel. Meanwhile, Molino del Pero is set in the towering Apennine Mountains, and is a good all round test for both high and low handicappers, so it’s fun for everyone.

OTHER COURSES JUST AN HOUR A WAY: Rimini Golf Club (18 holes), Adriatic Golf Club (27 holes); Golf Club I Fiordalisi (9 holes); Matilde di Canossa Golf (18 holes); Monte Cimone Golf Club (9 holes); Riolo Golf la Torre (18 holes); Golf Club Casalunga (9 holes).

While here, a visit to the region’s capital of Bologna is a must, where you can sample the hustle of city life while relaxing at one of the many outdoor cafes on the Piazza Maggiore. Why not visit the Ferrari, Ducati and Lamborghini museums as well as the official Ferrari shop in Maranello near Modena? Also, the town of Ferrara offers enchanting palaces. Stunning is the only word.

The Adriatic Coast

The easternmost tip of the region offers a host of courses all within an hour’s drive, including the fantastic Adriatic Golf Club in Cervia. Spread over 100 hectares of pine forest and seaside, this is a 27-hole layout that has hosted the Italian Professional Championship on several occasions.

Elsewhere, Rimini Golf Club, Riviera Golf Resort, Riolo Golf la Torre and C.U.S Ferrara Golf are all testing parkland layouts with water aplenty. Golf Club I Fiordalisi is a charming little nine-holer – perfect for those looking to fit other activities into their day.

OTHER COURSES JUST AN HOUR AWAY: Golf Club le Fonti (18 holes); Golf Club Casalunga (9 holes); Golf Club Bologna (18 holes); Golf Club Molino del Pero (18 holes).

Away from the golf, the Adriatic Coast is blessed with many wonderful beaches, and there’s great fun to be had at the theme and water parks – most notably at Mirabilandia. Also, the town of Ravenna is famed for its incredible Byzantine Mosaics and the splendid monuments have made this a UNESCO World Heritage site. And there’s nothing quite like spending a day in the relaxing spa town of Riolo, especially after visiting the magnificent fortress and medieval hamlet of Brisighella.

Parma & Salsomaggiore

Those staying to the west around Parma will love the superb Golf Club la Rocca. Established in 1985 and just shy of 6,700 yards, the course has a wonderfully mature feel despite artificial lakes acting as its main defence. Salsomaggiore Golf & Country Club, set on the hills that surround the town of the same name, is another picturesque course of championship quality.

Golf Club Castell’Arquato, Croara Country Club and the nine-holer Golf Club la Bastardina are other fine tracks in the area, while ten miles from Parma is Matilde di Canossa Golf Club, a layout characterised by gentle, natural slopes and the Quaresimo Stream that flows throughout.

OTHER COURSES JUST AN HOUR A WAY: San Valentino Golf Club (18 holes); Monte Cimone Golf Club (9 holes); Modena Golf & Country Club (27 holes).

The city of Parma is home to some truly wonderful architecture, including its Cathedral and Baptistery, while classical music lovers will love the Regio Theatre. For something different, the spa towns of Salsomaggiore and Tabiano serve as the perfect places to relax, or savour a typically medieval meal in the castles of the former Duchies of Parma and Piacenza.
